Anyone looking for a fast sailing yacht with a pronounced racing character will quickly end up with the Hustler SJ36. This 1980 Hustler SJ36, built by Vervale yard and designed by Stephen Jones, is a round-bilged GRP sailing yacht measuring 10.97 metres in length and 3.76 metres in beam. With a draft of 1.97 metres and an air draft of approximately 15 metres, she feels at home on open water and coastal inlets—exactly where this type of performance cruiser-racer comes into its own. At the same time, the interior offers around 1.85 metres of headroom, keeping a weekend away or longer trip comfortable.
The SJ36 is known as a sharp racing yacht, and you can see that in her lines and sail plan. She has been used at sea and sailed both sportily and recreationally. A nice indication of her potential is the owner’s recollection of a second place in the Ostend–Helgoland race. For those who like to read more background: an extensive history of this specific vessel is available.
She is laid out and equipped with speed, trim and versatility in sail handling in mind. On board there are no fewer than seven sails, including mainsail, genoa, jib, spinnaker(s) and storm sails. The genoa is from 2022, the asymmetric spinnaker is also from 2022, and the mainsail is from 2023. In addition, there is a jib, two symmetric spinnakers and storm sails. The mainsail has three reefs via slab reefing and the jib has one reef, making her usable in varying conditions. The mention of an aramid stringed mainsail and genoa underlines that sporty materials and shape retention were chosen.
She features a modern set of navigation equipment and electronics that suits a sporty sailing yacht with which you also want to cover serious miles. Think AIS, autopilot, GPS, chartplotter, VHF radio, wind instrument, depth sounder, log and compass. There are Raymarine instruments for speed, depth, temperature and wind, plus an Axiom plotter. For power supply there is shore power, a battery charger, alternator, voltmeter and a solar panel. The combination of an engine battery (lead-acid, 100Ah) and a lithium house battery (200Ah) makes her attractive for those who like to anchor out or remain self-sufficient underway.
The boat has a Yanmar 2GM20 inboard diesel engine of 16 hp with electric start and two cylinders. The stated consumption is around 1.5 litres per hour, with a cruising speed of about 9 km/h and a maximum of approximately 12 km/h. The fuel tank has a capacity of 80 litres. The hour meter was replaced in the past because it did not work at the time of purchase; the stated number of running hours is therefore indicative. For extra efficiency, a Flexofold folding propeller was fitted in 2021, which can have a pleasant effect on drag and performance both under sail and under power.
Inside you will find a practical layout with dinette, cooker, oven and refrigerator. There are two fixed berths aft, and in the saloon two additional berths are possible. With an 80-litre water tank she is suitable for weekend trips and short holidays. The toilet is manual; discharge goes directly overboard, something to take into account depending on your cruising area and local regulations. There is no heating, which fits her sporty approach and seasonal offshore use.
She was hauled out as recently as 2025 and antifouling was applied in the same year. No indications of osmosis have been reported. There is, however, one known point of attention: the last layer of antifouling is peeling, while the underlying layer is still sound. This is typically a job a new owner can plan at the next service, depending on your preferences for finish and coating build-up.
In the winter of 2023 to 2024, various onboard components were also addressed, including new bulkheads, cleaning up the keel grid and a new engine box, plus separate boxes for the engine battery and water bladder. In 2022 the standing rigging and chainplates were renewed—an important point for anyone looking to buy a sailing yacht with a focus on rigging and safety. In 2025 a new 100W solar panel was installed.
On deck she is equipped with guardrails, fenders and lines, and a mainsail cover. Long racing sail bags for the headsails are also included. With two anchors (chain and line) and a self-draining cockpit, she is ready for both sporty legs and quiet stops. Safety equipment includes, among other things, a lifebuoy and bilge pumps (two manual and one electric).
This makes the Hustler SJ36 an attractive sailing yacht for those seeking a performance sailboat with recent sails, modern navigation equipment and a clear focus on sporty sailing. She invites you to rack up miles, steer sharply on the tiller and get the best out of wind and water.
